For a long time, I’ve been very interested in how we create technology to improve ourselves and the implications for our sense of identity. At what point in the evolution of a person do they change so much from modifications that they no longer recognize ourselves. Many cultures have prayed to strange and extraordinary gods, chimeras made of our desires to assimilate attributes from the natural world. These four idols are chimera composites of species used in different aspects of human enhancement technology. Represented in my Idols are immortal squid, creatures who can regenerate limbs and crustaceans with the kind of exoskeletons that would allow us, if we could create the technology, to have superhuman strength and protection. These are my idea of the gods of Transhumanism and our eternal struggle to become something beyond nature and yet in thrall to its power and mystery.
